Refinement System

Overview

Equipment in Ragnarok Online can be 'upgraded' or 'refined' by upgrade NPCs in each major towns to make them more powerful. All equipment has a maximum upgrade level of +20, starting from +0. +0 items do not have any prefixes, but once they are upgraded, the number of upgrade levels will be displayed on the equipment - e.g. +5 Stunner. Upgrades above +10 use a different system, and it is very unusual to see gear upgraded above +10.

Also, you can turn in Rough Oridecon and Rough Elunium to create single refined Oridecon and Elunium, which are needed for upgrading Lv. 3 / Lv. 4 weapons, items and armors, respectively. The Kafra Shop, MVP monsters and War of Emperium treasure chests offers Enriched versions of these two ores, which, when used by a special upgrade NPC, will automatically roll the refinement chance one more time if the process fails, resulting in higher success chance.

The Refinement System in LeikaRO has gone through an overhaul in order to:

  • Remove the randomized hidden gains.
  • Make refine bonuses below +15 more appealing as well as closing the power gap a little bit.
  • Make refine chances past +10 more reasonable.
  • Make armor refines more useful.
  • Allow more refining options.
  • Scale down refine bonus breaks on equipment, so what needed +14, needs +9, for example.

The system however is still under WORK IN PROGRESS status.

Upgrade Requirements

To upgrade equipment, make sure you have the following:

  • Equipment
  • Money
  • Reagent

Not all item types can be upgraded. The following item types cannot be upgraded:

Reagents and Cost

To upgrade, you need to provide a reagent in order to upgrade your equipment. Reagent required differs depending on weapon level of the equipment. As for armors, they all take same reagent regardless of type.

Money taken also differs depending on weapon level of the weapons.

Following list shows reagent and money required.

  • Weapon Lv. 1 - Phracon (200 Z from NPC Shop) + 50 Z Fee
  • Weapon Lv. 2 - Emveretarcon (1,000 Z from NPC Shop) + 200 Z Fee
  • Weapon Lv. 3 - Oridecon (Monster drop) + 5,000 Z Fee
  • Weapon Lv. 4 - Oridecon (Monster drop) + 20,000 Z Fee
  • All Armor Types - Elunium (Monster drop) + 2,000 Z Fee

Refining Rough Oridecons and Eluniums

When you collect 5 Rough Oridecons and Rough Eluniums, you can convert them into a single Oridecon or Elunium by talking to an NPC in the upgrade shop. Note that you can make only one pure Oridecon or Elunium each time you talk to the NPC. This service does not cost any Zeny.

Effects Gained

An upgraded weapon get the following bonus to ATK and MATK :

Weapons

  • Weapon Lv. 1 - Every +1 gives 2 ATK & MATK, 2 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past the +7 safe limit and 6 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past +15.
  • Weapon Lv. 2 - Every +1 gives 3 ATK & MATK, 3 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past the +6 safe limit and 8 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past +15.
  • Weapon Lv. 3 - Every +1 gives 5 ATK & MATK, 5 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past the +5 safe limit and 10 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past +15.
  • Weapon Lv. 4 - Every +1 gives 7 ATK & MATK, 7 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past the +4 safe limit and 12 ATK & MATK extra for every upgrade past +15.
A +20 level 4 weapon gives 312 extra ATK and MATK.
Notes:
  • The upgrade bonuses above the safety limit are no longer random.
  • All upgrade bonuses are cumulative so refining a level 4 weapon from +15 to +16 increases your bonus ATK and MATK from 182 to 208.
  • Bows will now receive a MATK bonus per refine like every other weapon class.

Armor

  • Every +1 gives 3 Hard DEF, 2 Hard DEF extra for every upgrade past the +4 safe limit and 5 Hard DEF extra for every upgrade past +15.
  • Garments and shoes receive additional 1 Hard MDEF every two refines as well as an additional 1 Hard MDEF per refine past +15.
Example1 : a +20 Buckler will give 40 + 117 Hard DEF.
Example2 : a +20 Muffler will give 8 + 117 Hard DEF and 0 + 15 Hard MDEF.
Notes:
  • Overall DEF gain from refines was increased by a reasonable amount and certain pieces will now receive some MDEF as well.

Upgrades are useful, as for weapon upgrade, it increases your damage. For armors, it reduces damage you take.

Safety Level

The Safety Level is the maximum level of refinement that can be given to equipment with guaranteed success (0% chance of failure). Anything past the safety level has chance to fail, and failure means your equipment will be permanently destroyed, including any cards and other enchantments it may have had. You won't be refunded Zeny and the ore used to upgrade if it fails. Give careful thought before deciding if you want to upgrade a piece of equipment beyond its safety level.

Weapon

  • Weapon Lv. 1 - Safety Level +7
  • Weapon Lv. 2 - Safety Level +6
  • Weapon Lv. 3 - Safety Level +5
  • Weapon Lv. 4 - Safety Level +4

Armor

  • All armor types have Safety Level +4

Breaking Protection

LeikaRO does not have any method of preventing equipments breaking during refining for equipments below +10.

Equipments that's been successfully refined to +10 however, has the option to be refined with HD Carnium and HD Bradium.

Enriched Elunimum and Enriched Oridecon

Sunhbi in Payon ( /navi payon 158/146 ) can refine equipments at a higher rate with Enriched Oridecon or Enriched Elunium bought from the Kafra Shop, obtained by killing MVPs, or found inside War of Emperium chests. These Enriched metals work differently in LeikaRO. Upon failure, the equipment will automatically go through the refinement chance again. This results in a higher actual chance for success. The Zeny fee for this service is the same as normal refining.

Upgrades Beyond +10

As of the Renewal update, it is possible to upgrade equipment beyond +10, as high as +20. To upgrade beyond +10, the player must start with an item at +10 or higher.

To attempt to upgrade an item that is +10 or higher, talk to Bestry ( /navi prt_in 90/72 ) in the north room of the Prontera upgrade shop.

For armor, the player must have 100,000z and 1 Carnium. For weapons the player must have 100,000z zeny and 1 Bradium. In the event of a failed upgrade attempt, the item may break, but more frequently, will lose three upgrade levels. The success rates of upgrading above level 10 are very, very low, on the order of 20% for level 1, 2 and 3 weapons and 10% on level 4 weapons and armors.

It is possible to trade 3 Eluniums or 1 Refined Bradium for 1 Carnium, and 3 Oridecons for 1 Bradium. In all cases there is a 50,000 Zeny fee per exchange. The exchanging can be done by talking to Austry (prt_in 85, 71) in the north room of the Prontera upgrade shop.

The Kafra Shop sells HD Carnium and HD Bradium. They can also be found by killing MVPs and by opening War of Emperium chests. Failing with these HD metals will result in losing two refine levels, instead of three levels or breaking. The success chance for refines above +10 have been made more reasonable to achieve.

Blacksmith, Whitesmith, Mechanic

Originally, the Blacksmith's skill Weaponry Research was believed to add 1% refining chance per skill level (up to 10% at skill level 10) to the Blacksmith. This is false.

However, the Whitesmith skill Equipment Refine (Upgrade Weapon or Weapon Refine on other servers) will increase self-weapon refining chance by 0.5% per job level after job 50. At job 70 the Whitesmith has a +10% better chance to successfully refine a weapon than an upgrade NPC does. In LeikaRO, Whitesmiths are able to refine armors in addition to weapons, hence the skill name change, and are able to refine up to +20 instead of only +10 (using Bradium and Carnium past +10). Ranking points are awarded for armor refines using this skill. This means that for refines past +10, you can either use HD ores at NPC for "safe" refines with default success chance and losing 2 refines upon failure or try your luck with a smith, getting 10% extra chance but if it fails, it's game over.

Transcendent Mechanics enjoy the same success chance as a Job Level 70 Whitesmith for Equipment Refine.
